Regional Security Office (RSO)
The Embassy’s Regional Security Office is part of the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, which is the security and law enforcement resource of the Department of State. It is dedicated to providing a secure working environment for the conduct of foreign affairs through a commitment to the protection of life, information and facilities, as well as to ensuring the integrity of U.S. passports and visas. The Bureau accomplishes this dynamic global mission through a worldwide cadre of dedicated special agents, engineers, couriers, security specialists and other professionals.
The Regional Security Office in Lisbon is in the process of formalizing an Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) Country Council in Portugal. This Council encourages managers of U.S. enterprises with security responsibilities to pool their resources in order to cope with security problems, thus enhancing the exchange of security related information among the U.S. private sector. Key representatives of these councils and U.S. Embassy officials develop working relationships, allowing pertinent unclassified security information is shared in a timely manner. In addition, the Bureau of Diplomatic Security administers the Rewards for Justice Program. It is one of the U.S. government’s most valuable assets in the war against terrorism.
