July 11/12 - Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg was in Lisbon on July 11-12 to participate in the 5th ministerial of the Community of Democracies (CD), a unique forum that brings together those nations committed to promoting and strengthening democracy worldwide.

Speaking at the official opening of the meeting, Deputy Secretary Steinberg noted: “Some countries have not yet taken the first steps toward democracy. In others, the achievement is only partial (…). That is why our gathering today is so important – as a symbol of what is possible, as (…) and as a source of support for those trying to perfect their democracies.”

The CD forum was created by the governments of Poland, Chile, the Czech Republic, India, Mali, and the Republic of Korea and spearheaded by Secretary of State Madeleine Albright who was also in Lisbon for the ministerial.
