May 7/11The Obama Administration and the use of the media by the new Administration were the major themes of Embassy Lisbon-sponsored visit to Portugal by Professor Stephen J. Wayne, Georgetown University. Speaking at Lisbon and Porto university venues, with audiences averaging over sixty people, Professor Wayne gave a graphic account of some of the reasons behind the successful election of Barack Obama.

Professor Wayne believes that, in part, Obama’s presidential bid was successful due to the remarkable fundraising capacity of his campaign. The Georgetown professor stated that Obama answers on average ten emails of the over five thousand received a day.

In Lisbon, Professor Wayne spoke at the Instítuto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas (ISCSP) and the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. There was also a brown-bag lunch at the Universidade Católica. In Porto, Professor Wayne spoke at the Faculdade de Letras and the Faculdade de Ciências de Comunicação da Universidade do Porto.
