April 30/May 1 - PA Lisbon supported the participation of Dr. Ruth Wilson Gilmore, associate professor of American Studies and Ethnicity, University of Southern California, and recently-elected President of the American Studies Association in the U.S., at the 23rd annual meeting of the national Association of English Teachers (APPI), an association comprised of some 1,000 mostly secondary school teachers. This year’s conference theme, “The English Classroom Revisited,” addressed a variety of issues pertaining to teacher and student performance in the classroom through workshops and presentations.
Dr. Gilmore’s presentation, “Breaking the U.S. Secondary School-to-Prison Pipeline,” addressed the socio-cultural context of US secondary education today, to an audience of secondary school teachers from throughout the country, many of whom were exploring the topic, as presented by Dr. Gilmore, for the first time. Dr. Gilmore was the sole American presence on the roster of British presenters. A short Q&A session followed.
